Guest MINDSETTER™ Rep. Morgan: Governor Raimondo, Are You for the People, or Your Pals?

Hard working Rhode Islanders are tired of bouncing along the bottom. Average household income has retreated 12% since 2008; unfortunately, the cost-of-living hasn't.  Many folks, who lost their jobs back then, spent their savings to keep afloat, as they searched for a replacement job. The problem is that there is no replacement job or the replacement job pays less than the old one.

Rhode Islanders decided that they wanted a new leader, one who would help the State and them find better jobs and a better future. They know that our government is not working. Property taxes are crushing, the car tax came back, costs of electricity and water are skyrocketing, cities and towns are on the verge of bankruptcy, and companies along with jobs are leaving the state. Our people elected Governor Raimondo who made them think that she would tackle the status quo.

In my life, I have found that the things people care about most are the things on which they spend the most time and energy. We thought the Governor cared about Rhode Island. Instead it feels like a bait and switch. In her tenure, she has proposed multiple new taxes and fees; everything to extract more money from our wallets is on the table, including the $45 million tax increase on hard-working Rhode Islanders, known as new tolls.

The Governor worked hard to get tolls passed. She closed her ears and mind to our pleas and objections. She gave us maps from 1882 and incorrectly told us that truckers would gladly pay $3,000 fines. She made everyone searching for truth and accurate data submit official Access to Public Records requests only to provide reams of worthless documents and withhold those with potentially damaging information. I guess we were all out of order to expect transparency and accountability.

She used her political capital to pass tolls, but where has she been on the things that will make the lives of the average Rhode Islander better and easier?  At a fundraiser in California?  Attending another presidential party? Talking to the national press?

Why aren't our leaders spending their political capital on the things that will make Rhode Island a better place to work and live?  We want a Rhode Island where our graduates can find good jobs with futures and our seniors can live comfortably in the homes and neighborhoods they have been in for all their lives. I have said repeatedly, "People are not leaving because they want to. They are leaving because we make it too hard for them to stay."

Leaders should be working on Ethics reform, a Line item veto, creating an inspector general, property tax relief and reforming and repairing the foundations of our business climate.  Without question, that will take hard work, but hardworking Rhode Islanders can't wait forever.  It's been 8 years since the 2008 recession and unlike most states, we still haven't climbed out of the hole.  Despite all the talk about 'moving the needle', 'jobs and the economy', our citizens are still struggling.

We're tired of being last on the list of things to do.  We want leaders who care about us. Transparency and accountability should be a given without question, and our citizenry expects it. Insiders and contributors need to be placed low on the list, not at the top.

This can be a turnaround state, but the Governor can't get us there by flying around outside of our state. It will take diligent, constant, unremitting effort.  And the focus must be on the citizens of Rhode Island.

Today, the question we are asking: Are you here for the People or for your Pals?
