NEW: Providence Police Urge Residents & Businesses to Register Privately Owned Surveillance Systems

The Providence Police Department is urging residents and businesses to register their privately owned security cameras online through the Community Security Camera Registration Program.

“Footage from video surveillance is one of the best methods for identifying and apprehending criminals by actually catching them in the act of committing a crime. Installing video surveillance cameras in your home or business also shows commitment to community-police partnerships which are highly valued by our department,” said Colonel Hugh Clements.

According to the Providence Police, by registering a camera, the PPD can quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured criminal activity.

Once a camera is registered, registrants will only be contacted by the Providence Police Department if there is an incident in the vicinity of the security camera that requires further police investigation and, if necessary, police will request to view footage from the camera.

For example, participants of this program may be asked to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time for video that could possibly show activity involved in a crime, such as a getaway car or the direction in which a person of interest traveled.

Registration is voluntary and there is no cost associated with registration.

An individual’s personal information will be kept strictly confidential, said the Providence Police Department, and participants can withdraw from the program at any time.
