Police Taser Man While Breaking Up Domestic Dispute Off Atwells Avenue

Providence Police said they were required to use a taser on a suspect on Thursday, after encountering a domestic dispute off Atwells Avenue. 

About Incident 

According to police, they were responding to a report of a stolen vehicle on Atwells Avenue by Valley Street, when they were flagged down by an individual who informed them that there was a couple fighting one block over on Cutler Street.

Police said upon investigating, they encountered a man who had a woman pinned up against a wall.

According to police, they told the couple to stop fighting, at which time the man became belligerent and came toward the police in a threatening manner. 

Police said after warnings that they used their department-issued taser to subdue the man until additional units arrive, at which time the man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital to have the prongs removed.

The woman involved told police she did not want to press charges.

Police say the man tasered was due in court on Thursday.
