The Providence Preservation Society announced that its capital campaign, The Power of Preservation Education, has raised over $1 million towards its $1.3 million goal.

“Successful advocacy always starts with education. Those who fully understand the value of preservation and why it matters will be prepared to lead us into the future. The Power of Preservation Education: A Campaign for the Future of Providence will provide the resources to create that future. After more than 60 years of service to the community, PPS remains vibrant, relevant, and firmly committed to promoting the value of historic preservation,” said Executive Director Brent Runyon.

The campaign was launched this year to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the 1769 Old Brick School House, which PPS owns and stewards.

The purpose is to transform the colonial building in the College Hill National Landmark Historic District into an education center with a range of new and expanded educational programs, and a full-time staff member to manage the programming.

The Preservation Education Fund aims to raise $600,000 to support a full-time staff position, programming, and new educational initiatives.

According to the Providence Preservation Society, examples of programs are:

  • A comprehensive online portal for information on historic places in Providence.
  • A new training program focused on traditional building skills, such as plaster work, masonry, and restoration carpentry, which are necessary to preserve historic buildings.
  • Programs in architecture, design and heritage to help children become advocates and stewards of Providence’s unique built and landscape features.

The School House Capital Fund will raise $700,000 to make the Old Brick School House suitable for expanded educational programming.

Proposed improvements include:

  • Meeting all current building, ADA and fire codes, and making both floors accessible to all visitors while also retaining the character of the 250-year-old building.
  •  Enhancing PPS’s role in heritage tourism by creating space for exhibits on Providence’s history and architecture.
