The Exhibit

Along with a life-size replica of the Constitution, the exhibit also highlights the adoption of Rhode Island’s State Constitution in 1842.

Being the only state at the time without a constitution, a rebellion led by Thomas Wilson Dorr ensued the fight for the adoption of the People’s Constitution and for increased suffrage for non-landowners.

PC adjunct instructor Dr. Erik Chaput’s, ’03 book, The People’s Martyr: Thomas Wilson Dorr and His 1842 Rhode Island Rebellion, chronicles Dorr’s Rebellion.

Information from this book led to the creation of Rhode Island’s Constitution as it is known today, and is included in the exhibit.
