Providence Gets Its Fifth Sister City, But No One Knows for Sure

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza welcomed representatives from Guatemala led by former president and current mayor of Guatemala’s capital city, Álvaro Arzú, for the signing of a Sister City Agreement.

This is Providence’s fifth sister City, but no one in City Hall seems quite sure.

Previously, Providence created sister programs with the cities of Praia, Portugal (1994); Florence, Italy (2002), Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2004), Zhuhai, China (2015), and now, Guatemala City.

“I can only confirm 100% for our administration. Besides Guatemala City, we started a sister city relationship with Zhuhai, China last June in partnership with Bryant University,” said Emily Crowell, Elorza's press secretary.

Prior to Mayor Elorza’s administration the City has issued press releases about Sister City agreements with Praia, Florence and Santo Domingo but I don’t have the language used or copies of the signed agreements.

Elorza’s two sister cities ties him with former Mayor Buddy Cianci, who loved a good trip to visit the adjoining city. Elorza has scored two in less than two years and Cianci served as Mayor for twenty-one years.
