EDITORIAL: Elorza Gives Tax Break to One Greenhouse Gas Producer But Blocks Another

The recent pronouncement by Mayor Jorge Elorza to oppose the LNG facility being proposed by National Grid was perplexing at best. The rationale expounded by the rookie Mayor was that the facility would lead to greater production of greenhouse gases. Oops.

The problem is that Elorza just headed the charge to give millions in tax breaks to a cement company from Canada at the same very port area - a company that is widely criticized in Canada for its production of greenhouse gas pollutants.

As GoLocalProv.com reported, “The newest tenant at ProvPort - McInnis Cement - is tied to a range of environmental concerns, questions of financial viability, and claims of political 'cronyism,' according to one of Canada’s leading magazines. Add to the list of controversies that American lawmakers say the Quebec-based company is anti-American worker.”

Leading Canadian magazine Maclean’s wrote of McInnis' Canadian project, "The plant, which is located on the southern flank of Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, will emit between 1.8 and 2.2 million tonnes of greenhouse gases a year after it starts up this fall. This will make it the largest emitter of carbon in the province, according to Canada’s environment ministry, and will dwarf the yearly emissions of Shell Canada’s oil sands operations in Fort McMurray, Alta.”

Does the Mayor - or His Staff - Know There are Amazing Tools to Help Them?

It really seems as though the Mayor needs some basic research tools. We hate to be so blunt, but the Mayor should try Google.  You can do research with it and in just a nano second you can plug in the name of company knocking on the City of Providence’s door and find out that they are under scrutiny by environmentalist in Canada for creating a new major source of greenhouse gases.

You can search the name of the company and the names of the very corporate guys knocking on your door asking for a 12-year multi-million tax break. They are actually the same guys -literally the same guys -  as the ones in Canada that are under fire by Democratic members of Congress. According to U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH), McInnis’ financing scheme creates a disadvantage for U.S. workers.

It is all too apparent that Elorza was ill-equipped to manage a City — see crime, panhandling, parking meters, fire department, budget, schools, roads, racial composition of his staff, etc — but this is now getting downright dangerous. Subsidizing companies that have disregard for the environment and workers is beyond bad public policy - it is dangerous to public and workers' health.

Mayor Elorza was quoted in a press release announcing his opposition to the LNG facility at the Port as “There are clear energy policy and market signals at the local, national, and international level telling us that we should be investing in renewable and clean energy.”

We agree with the Mayor's quote, but must question why he gave millions in tax breaks to a major greenhouse gas producer who is widely criticized for being anti-American workers.

Mayor, here is the link to Google.com - try it, it might help.
