EDITORIAL: GE is Good for RI, But We Have Lost 3,900 Jobs in Past Two Months

Kudos to Governor Gina Raimondo for her efforts to land a new General Electric Digital Center in Rhode Island.  And credit needs to go to legislative leaders for giving her the tools to compete. The bad news however is that Rhode Island is losing jobs at a significant clip.

The shame is that we need to recruit, or grow faster. We would need to add a GE every week until next May just to get back to last year’s job levels.

"Although we've made progress -- 4,500 fewer Rhode Islanders are unemployed than a year ago -- creating an economy that's strong enough so that there's a job for every Rhode Islander who wants is going to take time. We're going to put people back to work by strengthening our schools, improving the skills of our workers, and making it cheaper and easier to do business here,” said Governor Raimondo in a statement on Thursday relative to unemployment numbers. But, in the past two months the RI economy has lost 3,900 jobs. Regardless of which number you want to use every Rhode Islander knows that the economy is limping and job creation is muted.

The GE win is solid. It was expensive — $5.6 million in incentives — and there is no guarantee of additional jobs, but investing in a great company like GE is good business for Rhode Island.

Gina Raimondo
Rhode Island is one of three areas in which GE has made a commitment — the others are Miami in which they are expanding their Digital Center and the other is Atlanta. GE’s Providence office will compete globally, regionally and against GE internally.

To Raimondo congrats on the effort. Now, we need to move so much faster.

Please note: an earlier version of this Editorial had 4,500 jobs lost in the last year. In fact, the correct number is Rhode Island lost 3,900 in the last two months. We apologize for the error.
