EDITORIAL: The Dumbest Idea Since Cianci Wanted a Helicopter

In the early 1990’s Vincent “Buddy” Cianci in the midst of financial melt down floated the idea of the City of Providence buying a helicopter for his travel.  It was simply the most ridiculous idea and the legendary Mayor who loved every perk of the office at least had the good sense to abandon the idea.

Now, some are proposing putting speed bumps on Blackstone Boulevard. The “Boulevard" is one of the city's most beautiful roads and the collective value of the homes total a couple of hundred million dollars.

The idea of placing speed bumps is simply stupid.

There are dozens of reasons why this is almost comical, but here are just three:

1) It would ruin the beauty of one of the nicest city streets in any city in America. Can you imagine Paris installing them on the Champs-Elysees.

2) The City of Providence is neither capable of maintaining roads or plowing streets. Adding a further maintenance challenge is just not a good idea.

3) The solution to speeding is enforcement. Speed guns, tickets and more revenue to the City. Speed bumps as a solution to speeding is analogous to as stopping shoplifting by closing all the stores.

Buying a helicopter so that a Mayor can fly from India Point to Silver Lake is a better idea than putting speed bumps on Blackstone Boulevard.
