Providence Police said they arrested a suspect who allegedly possessed a gun — and a loaded magazine, in violation of new state law — on Saturday night.

According to police, the suspect was in possession of a magazine that contained over a dozen rounds.

The arrest comes after a federal judge in December of 2022 upheld the new Rhode Island state law which prohibits magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

About Incident

On Saturday, police said they observed a vehicle leaving the scene of a homicide memorial at the corner of Amherst and Julian Streets in Olneyville.

Police said that as Sebastian Maria, age 21, went to leave the location, they stopped the vehicle when it was determined to not have an active registration.

According to police, an unregistered Glock, along with more than a dozen rounds in a fifteen-round magazine, were found in the vehicle.

Maria has been held for the next session of District Court.

He is facing charges of carrying a gun without a permit — and possessing a “large capacity feeding device” — as prohibited now by Rhode Island law.
