The Rhode Island Department of Housing has entered into a purchase and sale agreement for the acquisition of the former Charlesgate nursing home building located at 100 Randall Street, just off of North Main Street, for $6.95 million.

The Charlesgate building will provide up to 100 rooms to help Rhode Islanders seeking shelter and offer them the housing they need, said the Department of Housing

“If the acquisition of this property proceeds after the inspection process is completed, this facility will provide us with up to 100 rooms to serve as shelter for Rhode Island families experiencing homelessness,” said Secretary Pryor. “An acquisition such as this helps to fulfill Governor McKee’s charge that we invest public funds in assets we can utilize for housing-related purposes over the long term.”

The State Properties Committee previously approved the Department of Housing's plan to acquire the facility.

The cost of the property will be covered by Rhode Island’s FY2024 Homelessness Infrastructure appropriation from the General Assembly. Those funds are for the acquisition or construction of temporary or permanent shelter and other housing solutions and stabilization programs.
