VIDEO: Man Driving Pickup Truck Spins Out and Crashes Into Mayor Smiley’s Home

PHOTO: GoLocal
A man driving a pickup truck eastbound on Waterman Street on Providence’s East Side on Thursday afternoon inexplicably lost control and spun out, crashing into the wall of Mayor Brett Smiley’s home.

After spinning around, he drove forward the wrong way on Waterman and took out a traffic light support before coming to a stop.

GoLocal captured the incident on video just seconds after the crash, which happened just after 2:00 PM.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to have just lost control. The truck came to rest on the sidewalk facing oncoming traffic on Waterman.

The vehicle was smoking as GoLocal arrived.

The man, appearing to be older, said he was fine. Another driver who arrived first had called 911 for emergency response.

This is the second incident at the Mayor's home in the past week.

Mayor's Home Is a Magnet

On the evening of May 9, Providence Police were called to the residence of Smiley and his husband Jim DeRentis, for a report of an incident.

Two men had been sitting on their front steps, and then smashed a planter on the couple's property.

The two men then fled the scene.

After police were called and an investigation was conducted, two male suspects matching the descriptions provided to police were apprehended and arrested.

Following the arrests, Smiley and DeRentis decided not to press charges.

Smiley did not respond to request for comment at time of publication.

Another Crash in April

As GoLocal reported in April, a car ran a red light on Hope Street, and nearly hit a person riding on a scooter.

The vehicle, which crossed both lanes of traffic, came to rest outside of Smiley and DeRentis' home.
