VIDEO: Providence Police Identify Latest Fatal Shooting Victim

The homicide marks the 6th in six weeks in the city.
"Officers observed a Jeep at a high rate of speed on Eddy Street going toward Rhode Island hospital," said Major David Lapatin, of the shooting that occured around 10:40 PM on Saturday night.

"That person identified is Kiovany Diaz aged 21," said Lapatin. "He was taken to the ER, given care, and passed away the next day.
"We traced the scene back to the area of Massachusetts Avenue — we believe he was in that car that took him to the hospital," said Lapatin. "This is still early in the investigation."
"It’s still early — we’re working the investigation like we work any other one — we have some people in mind, some names," said Lapatin, of potential suspects.
Uptick in Violence
"Three [homicides] in the last eight days — it is concerning," said Lapatin. "Any time there’s a heatwave, there’s more people outside, more people getting aggravated."
"We’ve had these before," he added.
