Faculty from the Naval War College’s Arctic Studies Group will hold a panel discussion on the Navy’s new Arctic Strategy and what it means for America's Sea Services -- the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard -- on Wednesday, May 29 at noon.

Walter Berbrick with the U.S. Naval War College in Newport recently joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE to discuss the latest in the Arctic region — from changing environmental factors to geopolitics — and the role of the United States moving forward. 

Berbick, who is an Associate Professor in the War Gaming Department, the Director of the Arctic Studies Group, and the Area Study Coordinator for the Global Climate Security electives program at College, spoke to his family’s military history — and his decision to focus on Arctic policy. 

“We’re seeing a northern region that’s melting twice — or warming twice — the rate as anywhere in the world…so the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identified [that] and that the warming is a result of more greenhouse co2 emissions,” said Berbrick. “Here at the college we don’t necessarily focus on the causes — we focus on the effects.”
