Woman, Child Hospitalized Following Hammer Attack in Cranston

A woman and her juvenile child were injured in a hammer attack in Cranston on Saturday. 

The incident occurred on Dyer Avenue at the Riverbend housing complex shortly after noon. 

According to police, both victims sustained injuries to their heads - officers said both were bleeding, with a “large amount of blood.”

The female victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment; the juvenile was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. 

 

Suspect Apprehended

Witnesses described the suspect as a “Hispanic male with an afro,” who had fled the scene into a building with a hammer in his hand. 

According to witnesses, the attack appeared to be “random.”

Police said they located and arrested the suspect, later identified as Rashad Talley, who police said was born in 1997 (exact birthdate redacted). 

In their report, police said that a family member of Talley’s told officers he had a mental illness.

Police located and seized the hammer; Talley is facing felony assault charges.
