Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida on Thursday night nominated former President Donald Trump to serve as the Speaker of the House.

The House has been in chaos for the past three days. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has failed ten times to win enough votes to secure the Speakership.

In the 11th round, McCarthy failed to secure enough votes and Trump only received one vote.

This has been the longest battle for control of the House in more than 160 years.

As the Constitution does not explicitly state that the speaker must be an incumbent member of the House, it is permissible for representatives to vote for someone who is not a member of the House at the time, and non-members have received a few votes in various speaker elections over the past several years.

No one outside the House has ever been elected.

A speaker must win a majority of the members in attendance.

The House is in adjournment until 12 noon on Friday.
