Carol Anne Costa: The Stockings Were Hung….

Well, it is Christmas morning 2014 and all over the land and people are awakening to reveal what Santa left in their stockings. Come on, who doesn't love a Lifesaver book or a toasty warm pair of fuzzy socks?... not sure it would be Christmas morn without them. It’s no secret, everyone misses a free throw now and again turns out those lifesavers really do help.  And, from time to time we all get cold feet, so I guess that l jolly old elf does know us well. As we speak, I am hoping for Lifesavers and socks,Toblerone and tangerines will be fine too; I pray I earned a sweet and coal free Christmas...only Santa knows for sure.  So what do you think the stockings hung by the chimney with care look like across the land this morning? I have some thoughts...

So many people-so many stockings, and  they sure are electic; some velvet, some knit, some crafty and handmade and some beautifully exotic, but it’s what inside on Christmas Day that matters most. Ahh, 2014 provided a plethora of characters and happenings that certainly peaked my speculation on what may be found.

It seems Santa left sections of additional fencing, a copy of “Security for Dummies” and a brand new “Acting Director” for the Secret Service. The new direction for the embattled agency will be led by Joe Clancy and according to US News he is a level headed, disciplined and consummate professional.

Massachusetts Senator, Elizabeth Warren woke to a sock chock full of fan mail, bumper stickers, and a web site complete with a petition to inspire a run for President in 2016. She certainly has the attention of many, particularly on the left, and they are not sitting idly by. Conversely, they are rustling that stocking so much it could fall from the mantle.

Somewhere in Providence a man named Buddy is “aprendo la sua calza”--opening his stocking--and inside he finds redemption and rejection. But, what makes his Christmas morning special is his ability to treat these two gifts with honesty. You see, Buddy is a forever realist,  a man who has a knack for straight talk (whether you agree or not) sits well with Santa.

Malala Yousafzai found her well deserved Nobel Peace Prize. The bravery and wisdom of this young woman continues to be a source of hope for so many children denied education. In her Nobel Lecture, her mission and drive seems more powerful than ever as she  said in part, “This award is not just for me. It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change.”

A tartan stocking hangs on a mantle in Westerly, oh wait is that a copy of “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus”? But then, when you dig deeper inside, a bunch of actual CD’s and albums. No subscriptions in here; oh, how Taylor  loves the real deals! This musical powerhouse changed the discussion and awakened a movement about the intellectual property that is music. Time for Spotify to “Shake it Off."  So glad her stocking hangs in Rhode Island some of the time. And yes, I am singing “ Welcome to New York”  right now!

There is a stocking that hangs in the humble apartment in Rome that just might be the stocking for the ages. Brimming over with humility, love and the true spirit of Christmas, Pope Francis’s stocking has a healthy dose of truth telling aimed directly at the Curia. As he pulled his Christmas message from his stocking out came 15 ailments   afflicting the church, including a serious case of “Sprirtual Alzhiemers.” He calls out the terrorism of gossip and delivers a gift of self examination. I cannot tell you how many folks retweeted and shared his comments on my social feeds. This Pope is a gift and no matter what creed, non believers included he is impacting the world, just ask Cuban Americans.

I hope your stockings are filled with love, truth, mercy and service.  And, on this Christmas morning, let us remember those who are alone, sick, dying, cold, homeless and far from loved ones in service to our nation. Take a moment to reflect, and in 2015 pay it forward. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a full stocking!
