Cicilline Calls Trump Administration's Cutting of Refugee Admissions "Shameful"

Congressman David Cicilline
U.S. Congressman David Cicilline is blasting President Donald Trump’s administration for cutting refugee admissions.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration cut refugee admissions for 2019 to 30,000 people, a record low since the refugee resettlement program started in 1980.

“In consideration of both U.S. national security interest and the urgent need to restore integrity to our overwhelmed asylum system, the United States will focus on addressing the humanitarian protection cases of those already in the country," said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement.

Cicilline released the following statement:

“The callous decision announced today by Secretary Pompeo, made outside of the statutory process that governs refugee admissions, is sadly, entirely in keeping with this Administration’s concerted efforts to prevent legal immigration into this country. Attempts to justify this cut based on national security or concern for tackling a backlog of cases is entirely without merit. Refugees are this country’s most strongly vetted group of immigrants and have already gone through an extensive screening process before they are even considered for placement in the United States. This is a shameful day for our country.”
