Could Jack Reed be the Next Democratic Leader in the U.S. Senate?

Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI)
The announcement by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to retire has set off a mammoth re-shuffling in the Democratic leadership.

Jack Reed has served in the Senate since 1997 and has distinguished himself as a pragmatic and respected member of the Senate.

According to political pragmatists, the early money is on Senator Charlie Schumer (D-NY) or Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, but who is supposed to win does not always become reality.

“While Reed would make a terrific Leader, there is a pretty long line in front of him.  Schumer and Durbin are the frontrunners, although Schumer probably has an edge in that contest,” says Jennifer Duffy of the Washington-based Cook Report.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY)
Previous elections for leader have been complex. For example, in the Democratic Senate fight for leader in 1988, front runners Daniel Inouye of Hawaii and Louisiana Senator J. Bennett Johnson lost to George Mitchell of Maine, who played on his Eastern-base and pro-environmental position. As Congressional Quarterly wrote in 1989, “The official secrecy of the vote and the highly personal nature of the contest made it difficult to tell how predetermined the outcome had been.”

Darrell West of Brookings tells GoLocal, “The person who wants to be Democratic Leader is Charles Schumer of New York. He has been serving at Reid’s top deputy and he would be the one most likely to move up to the leadership position.”
