The Election with Biggest Impact on RI - Reed’s Lost Chairmanship

According to polls across the country, the biggest loser in today’s election may be United States Senate Democrats and locally our own Jack Reed. While Reed is likely to win his 4th term of United States Senate, his power may be adversely impacted after tonight's results come in.  The New York Times projects that Reed has a 99% chance of re-election.

Reed presently is the second ranked member of two powerful committees - Banking and Armed Services and he is the 9th ranked Democrat on the Appropriations Committee.  Two members ahead of him on Appropriations - Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is retiring and Louisiana Senator Mary Landeau is in a dog fight for re-election.

The big lose for Reed and Rhode Island is the missed opportunity. With Michigan Senator Carl Levin announcing he would not seek a 7th term, thus opening up the powerful Chairmanship of the Senate Armed Services Committee for Reed if the Democrats were able to hold the Senate - but that is not likely according to political prognosticators.

If the election predictions hold the Senate will flip from Democratic control to GOP hands and Reed will fall from the majority to the minority.  Accordingly, Reed will face big reductions in influence, policy making and staffing.  Committee staffs traditionally shift from two-third staffing for the majority and one-third for the minority party.
