Don Roach: My 2015 Christmas Wish List

Like the old yuletide carol, All I want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth, my Christmas wish list is both practical and hopefully realistic over the next several months. I’m not asking Santa to rewind the clock to November 2014 and declare Allan Fung Rhode Island’s next Governor. Nope. And I’m not even going to ask for David Cicilline to be removed by the Rhode Island electorate in 2016, finally ridding ourselves of one of the worst politicians our state has ever endured. Nope, not going to do it. Instead, I’m going to keep my list simple and hopeful. So here goes.

#1 – I wish that Providence Mayor Elorza and the Providence Firefighters reach an agreement.

As GoLocal has reported ad nauseum, the firefighters and Mayor Elorza do not see eye to eye. I honestly feel that this is a bit of an embarrassment to the city because the firefighters and the mayor’s office have been embroiled in some form of battle for years.  Cicilline also wrangled with the firefighters as well. I’d like to see the two sides compromise and stop wasting valuable time entrenched in their respective positions. Each side giving just a little isn’t too much to ask is it?

#2 I wish RIPTA would not raise rates on public transportation.

Last week, I wrote about how rate hikes will not save RIPTA. My wish is that somehow people with common sense will take over the administration of RIPTA, reverse a decade long rate hike addiction, and choose a better path for RIPTA and RI public transportation in general. Whoa, this seems like a real stretch wish – “common sense”, reversing an addiction, choosing a better path? Ok, so maybe some of the wishes on this list are not realistic, but you can’t blame a guy for trying.

#3 I wish Allan Fung runs for mayor in 2016 and Governor in 2018

I already told you I’m not looking to go back in time but I truly believe our state needs a leader like Allan Fung. I hear some of you saying that Fung has become damaged goods with the whole police ticketing scandal (a la the once meteoric Chris Christie and his bridge scandal), but if we “trusted” Chafee after he time and again gave us strong evidence not to, why can’t we give one of the state’s outstanding mayors another chance in 2018? Sadly, I haven’t kept up with Fung’s campaign team to know if he’s announced a run for Cranston Mayor in 2016 and I have purposely avoided asking him about 2018…….until now. Forward with Fung in 2018, baby!!!

#4 I wish you all a safe and happy holiday

Whether your best Christmas gift was dirt from the Boston Red Sox ball park, a new coat, or simply spending time with family and friends, I wish all GoLocal readers a safe and happy holiday. There are many things going on in the state, many of them wrong, and many of us suffering with the ramifications daily. But this holiday season let’s try to push the pause button on what’s wrong and enjoy what’s right in our lives. We will have plenty of time to discuss, debate, and shout about everything going wrong in 2016.

That wraps up my wish list, leave a comment below about what some of your wishes are for this Christmas.
