Corporate CEO Helena Foulkes, a Democratic candidate for governor of Rhode Island, is hiring some of the key players in Gina Raimondo’s circle.

GoLocal first reported in August that Foulkes was going to run for governor. In an interview on GoLocal LIVE in August, top political scientist Jennifer Lawless, the chair of the political science department at the University of Virginia, said that Foulkes has some post-Raimondo challenges as a candidate.

"The challenges are a couple. The first is that she does look like Gina Raimondo 2.0 in terms of her background. This is not to say that they're actually comparable but you've got a business background, you're running as a Democrat, you're wealthy, you've been highly successful -- the other issue is that she doesn't have much in the way of a political record," said Lawless.

Raimondo Team

Foulkes has signed Putnam Partners, the political consulting firm that Raimondo paid approximately $900,000 from her campaign, for consulting and developing her advertising.

Putnam Partners claims that its team has also done campaign work for President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama.

“Our firm’s principals have produced national television ads for six American presidential campaigns including Presidents Biden and Obama. We’ve served as lead ad makers and strategists for campaigns in 48 states,” says Putnam Partners.

They also work with companies on improving their corporate reputation. “Another recent success story was helping turn around the reputation of a public utility judged "the most hated company in America,” cites Putnam on its website.

Top Raimondo staffer Jon Romano has joined the Foulkes campaign. He was the point person for Raimondo on developing the Promise program — free college tuition for Rhode Island students attending the Community College of Rhode Island. He then worked with Raimondo at the Democratic Governors Association when she chaired the group.

Previous to joining Raimondo, Romano served in the Obama administration as a strategic advisor for strategic communications.

And, Foulkes has also hired Raimondo’s 2018 campaign manager Jonathan Blair as an adviser.
