“It Makes No Sense” - Lawless on Harris & Raimondo Visiting RI to Sell Biden’s Infrastructure Plan

UVA Political Science Chair said the visit Harris and Raimondo to RI to sell Biden's infrastructure plan makes "no sense."
University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless said it “makes no sense” that Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo are coming to Rhode Island on Wednesday on a visit centered around President Joe Biden’s infrastructure proposal.

“It makes no sense — I don’t think that Kamala Harris has to convince Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed that this is the thing to vote for,” said Lawless, of Harris and Raimondo coming to Rhode Island — instead of focusing on swing states.

“So why she’s making this trip is a little unusual. It could be just to shore up Gina Raimondo’s credentials, and demonstrate what’s coming out Commerce is really important and this role is really important and the Vice President is going to back what she’s going to say,” Lawless added.

“The fact that it’s Rhode Island makes it a little bit unusual. It’s not like a neighboring state is even in question here, so the whole thing is bizarre,” she said.

Bill in Focus

As for the infrastructure bill itself, Lawless also spoke to the dynamics of where she sees it at this time.

“It’s looking more convoluted and complicated than I think the Democrats had hoped for — first, there’s major debate over the mere definition of infrastructure and this general partisan divide, or the Republicans plus Joe Manchin and a partisan divide over how you define infrastructure,” said Lawless.

“It’s gotten to the point where it’s expanded and broadband now counts and childcare certainly doesn’t to Republicans,” she added.
