Prospects for Impeaching Trump vs. 25th Amendment: UVA’s Lawless LIVE

Jen Lawless
University of Virginia Political Science Chair Jennifer Lawless appeared on GoLocal LIVE where she spoke to the acts of domestic terrorism at the United States Capitol on Wednesday — and what she sees are the prospects for those who are calling for President Donald Trump’s removal.

“It did not seem like I was watching U.S. politics — it did not seem like something that was happening in Washington D.C.,” said Lawless, of seeing the events unfold. “And the thing that struck me over and over again was the glee on their faces and what they thought they were accomplishing by delaying this electoral vote certification. It’s so disappointing and so depressing.”

Does Trump Get Removed?

“On the House side, David Cicilline and Jamie Raskin I know are circulating what I know are articles of impeachment,” said Lawless on Thursday. “I don’t think there’s any issue they would pass the House — the question is has the Senate moved sufficiently to where they would convict.”

“It seems like the impeachment option is the better option as opposed to invoking the 25th Amendment because there are hardly any cabinet members left who are not Trump loyalists,” said Lawless. “The 25th Amendment option is probably dead on arrival.”

“It seems like there’s more support among Republicans to ensure that Donald Trump has no power,” said Lawless. “I don’t know if that’s actually enough to get them to convict Donald Trump on articles of impeachment.”
