VIDEO: Underneath Debate Chaos, Clear Contrasts Between Trump and Biden: Lawless LIVE

University of Virginia Political Science Department Chair said that despite the chaos of Tuesday night’s Presidential debate, that she believes “really, really clear contrasts” between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden emerged.

Lawless, an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Political Science who was quoted in Politico Wednesday morning, appeared on GoLocal LIVE to share her perspective.

“It was chaos, and it’s unfortunate, because I think that underneath that chaos, were some really, really clear contrasts between Joe Biden and Donald Trump when it comes to democratic values and democratic governance, and the things that should be on voters minds as they head into November,” said Lawless. “And all of that was subsumed by combat, yelling, and interrupting that was really unprecedented in a Presidential debate.”

Lawless referenced that while it seems that Tuesday’s performances would rank up with the biggest blunders in U.S. history -- that she believes neither side believes they faltered.

“I think the first thing to note here, I don’t think either side would say there were any blunders last night,” said Lawless. “So part of the reason that this doesn’t compare to the Al Gore sigh, the George Bush looking at his watch, was because it was clear that this was Trump’s deliberate strategy, and it was clear that Joe Biden had a strategy, and both tried to follow through."

“From my perspective, the reason that there was so much chaos, and the reason that it never quelled, was because there were no breaks,” said Lawless. “Typically during the debate there’s a commercial break, you go and regroup with your team, and they say either this isn’t working, or you want to tone this down, or whatever. There was no opportunity to do that, so they were left to their own devices and they had to on the fly make an assessment as to whether what they were doing work.”

“Donald Trump thinks everything he does works, so as the debate proceeded, he just doubled down,” she added. “And Joe Biden tried really hard to make sure he had as many opportunities as possible to speak directly to the American people, because when he was engaging with Donald Trump, it was just as ineffective.”
