GoLocal has confirmed that Rhode Island Lt. Governor Sabina Matos will announce that she is a candidate for the soon-to-be-vacated first Congressional district seat in Rhode Island.

She will make a formal announcement on Monday.

The seat is open by sitting Congressman David Cicilline having announced his resignation. He has been appointed to serve as the head of the Rhode Island Foundation.

Matos impressively won a competitive Democratic primary for Lt. Governor last September and then handily defeated Republican candidate Aaron C. Guckian 51%-43%.

Prior to being named Lt. Governor by Dan McKee after his ascension to the Governor’s office in 2021 due to former Governor Gina Raimondo leaving to serve as Commerce Secretary for President Biden, Matos was the President of the Providence City Council.

Matos has name recognition and momentum.

What she does not have is a war chest. She has less than $500 in her state account.

State funds cannot be used for a federal campaign, but through a series of steps, dollars can be converted.
