Sabina Matos: 19 to Watch in 2019

It is the rise of the Phoenix in Providence. On Monday, Sabina Matos won back the Presidency of the Providence City Council and returns to the top legislative position in the City of Providence.

As Providence goes so goes Rhode Island. Matos will be faced with taking on some of the most difficult issues in the state.

A poor performing education system, crime, and unfunded pension and benefits liabilities are just some of the many challenges the city faces.

Matos was circumspect in her comments in accepting the Presidency and giving credit to the women who came before her.

“Today, women and minorities are not only the majority of the city’s population, but we now make up the majority of the Providence City Council. Now, more than ever before, the Council’s leadership reflects what our community truly looks like," said Matos.

"Today, the City of Providence has made history by swearing in a majority women-led Council. Women have not always had seats at the table, but one-by-one Councilwoman Carolyn Brassil, Councilwoman Josephine Diruzzo, Councilwoman and former Acting Council President Balbina Young, Councilwoman Patricia K. Nolan, Councilwoman Rita Williams, Councilwoman and former Council President Eveylyn Fargnoli chipped away at that glass ceiling, and today our City Council represents those that have elected us to serve,” said Matos
