Desmond Cambridge: 19 to Watch in 2019

Brown soph Desmond Cambridge
Brown University sophomore basketball player Desmond Cambridge has been a human highlight film his first year and a half on College Hill. He won Ivy League Freshman of the Year and this year he is leading the Bears with18 points a game.

Anyone who saw his 360-degree dunk at the Pizzitola last February against Columbia knew right there that this is not your average Ivy League player.

According to The Stepien -- which ranks college players' NBA chances -- Cambridge is the second best mid-major prospect to watch in 2019 out of ten ranked players.

“Cambridge is the rare player who can pull off a 360 dunk on one play and then nail a 3 running off a screen on the next. Although he is quite trigger-happy, Cambridge can simply put the ball in the hoop, and his package of tools suggests that he could do the same at the NBA level. Brown used him first and foremost as a 3-point shooting threat last season, running him off countless screens to get him open and encouraging him to shoot off movement. For a player who took so many difficult attempts, Cambridge performed valiantly, nailing 33.5 percent of his 3s as a freshman. He is also comfortable pulling up to take and hit tough shots in the mid-range and flashes impressive athleticism and strength as a finisher around the bucket. Cambridge forces too many bad shots and hasn’t shown much as a creator for others, so improving his court awareness and discipline should be his main focus for this offseason. Showing that he can get to the rim more consistently off a live dribble is also a point of improvement,” writes The Stepien.

Cambridge coupled with fellow sophomore Tam Choh and Junior Brandon Anderson has helped lead Coach Mike Martin to a record out-of-conference season.
