Major RI State House and Providence City Hall Staff Shake-Up

Brett Smiley goes to the State House
GoLocalProv has confirmed that a series of staff changes have hit both Governor Gina Raimondo’s Office and Mayor Jorge Elorza’s staff this weekend and will be formally announced on Monday.

Brett Smiley, the failed candidate for Mayor of Providence and who had been serving as the Chief Operating Officer for Jorge Elorza will move to head Gina Raimondo’s office as Chief of Staff.

Smiley will be Raimondo’s third Chief of Staff in the last month. Steve Neuman was pushed out and David Cruise had been acting Chief-of-Staff. Cruise will move on to be a Senior Advisor for Raimondo. Neuman went on to work for Hillary Clinton's campaign in Michigan.

Elorza Void

The loss of Smiley creates a major void for Elorza. Smiley has been the point person with the City Council, the business community and state leaders. For Elorza, who has struggled as Mayor, the loss of Smiley creates a hole in his leadership.

Loss of Smiley is a big blow to the struggling Elorza
GoLocal has learned that Smiley beat out Kate Coyne McCoy for the chief-of staff position. She had lead Raimondo’s PAC and previously had been a chief Northeast fundraiser for EMILY’s list.
