NEW: Smiley Calls on Solomon to Repay Debt to Providence Taxpayers

Michael Solomon
Democratic candidate for Mayor Brett Smiley has called on Michael Solomon, Democratic candidate for Mayor and City Council President, to repay his outstanding debt of $400,000 to Providence taxpayers before spending any more money on television ads for his campaign.

In a letter sent to Solomon, Smiley stated, "The sizable loan you took out from the City in 1987 – a full 27 years ago – remains largely unpaid today, with over $400,000 in outstanding debt. That money should be used to support neighborhood businesses, spur job creation, and revitalize our Downtown. Instead, you’ve used money that should go towards paying back your loan for television commercials to advance your political career."

Solomon received his loan from the City of Providence 27 years ago. Solomon has made a personal donation of $297,000 to his campaign for Mayor and has already spent almost $100,000 on television ads while the majority of the loan remains unpaid.
