NEW: Council President Solomon Announces Providence Mayoral Bid

Providence City Council President Michael Solomon has made it official that he's running for Mayor of Providence, at an event held this morning at Building Futures in Olneyville, a non-profit enterprise that works on career-building services for the unemployed.

Solmon, President of the City Council since 2011 and member since 2006, joins Brett Smile, Jorge Elorza and Lorne Adrian as the latest candidate to declare in the already-heated Providence mayoral race.

“I am running for Mayor to make Providence a city of opportunity for all,” said Solomon at this morning's event. “We must build upon the progress and hard work of the last three years. We must focus on growing the city’s middle class, rebuilding our schools, and revitalizing our neighborhoods. We have come too far, worked too hard, and achieved too much to turn back now.”

Vision for Providence

In an e-mail to supporters, Solomon said he's running to make Providence a City of Opportunity for All.  He wrote:

• As Mayor, we will grow our middle class by creating good jobs, rebuilding our schools, and finding ways to offer tax relief to those who need it most.
• As Mayor, we will keep our city on a path to fiscal responsibility.
• As Mayor, we will continue to revitalize by Downtown by supporting entrepreneurs, artists, and restaurateurs, who have made Downtown a global destination.
• We need to continue our efforts to improve the quality of life in all of our neighborhoods.   That means reducing crime and curbing youth violence. That means creating more affordable housing and investing in our neighborhoods from parks to pools to community gardens.
