Moore: Mount Saint Charles Sends The Wrong Message

What would Archie Bunker do?

That's what I was thinking after GoLocal broke the story about the Mount Saint Charles ban of transgender of students from their school.

Archie Bunker was the bigoted, cranky, and intolerant character, played by the late Carroll O'Connor, in the hit 1970s television show All In The Family. In the show's opening theme song, Bunker's character sings a lamentation of a time gone by. "Girls were girls and men were men," he croons.

Make no mistake: Bunker would support Mount's decision. That's not good company.

"Can” and “Should”

But what about Jesus--the person whose teachings the school is dedicated towards furthering? What would he do? I cannot say for certain. But I can make an educated guess.

Jesus associated with the outcasts of society--tax collectors, prostitutes, Samaritans. He made a habit out of making the excluded feel included. He comforted the downtrodden. People in tough situations, he provided with hope.

In sum, he did the opposite of Mount's transgender policy.

Acceptance and Tolerance

So with that in mind, I find it hard to believe that Jesus would approve of rejecting people based on their gender identity. Instead, I believe he would embrace acceptance and tolerance.

One thing is clear: as a private school, Mount Saint Charles can accept whomever they want. They can make their own rules. The question becomes what should they be doing? It’s not a question of can, but a question of should.

Unlike Bunker, the school didn't say girls should be girls and men should be men. Instead, in their statement defending the policy, they said they couldn't accommodate transgender students. Their statement, released on Friday, was confusing and contradictory.

"The policy that currently appears in the Mount Saint Charles Student Handbook is not intended to be discriminatory toward transgendered students nor is Mount Saint Charles Academy’s intent or desire to exclude transgender students," the school said.

A Confusing Statement

"The policy was put in place for the simple reason that Mount Saint Charles feels that its facilities do not provide the school with the ability to accommodate transgender students."

Yet regardless of their intentions, the policy discriminates and excludes.

And why, exactly, are the school's facilities unable to accommodate transgender students? The school failed to elaborate on that point. That only leaves us guessing and speculating. Both of which are never safe propositions.

Inadequate Facilities?

Is the school concerned about bathroom and locker room facilities? If so, it doesn't take much ingenuity or resourcefulness to come up with a solution. For instance, the school could make one of the restrooms used by the administration available to transgender students.

Let's be pragmatic here. The school will never have to accommodate more than a handful of transgender students since the population is small. (That's all the more reason why the population must be protected and welcomed--not ostracized.)

To the school's credit, it later released a second statement that showed some progress. Mount Saint Charles said they're exploring ways to accommodate transgender students. It also said that it hasn't yet turned down any transgender students.

What Would Jesus Do?

Let's hope the school continues on that path. Mount should find a way to accept all students, regardless of their gender identity. Mount should serve any student who desires a Catholic education.

Right now, the school's message is: if you're different, we cannot serve you. It's just too hard. That's the wrong message.

A more Christian message, I believe, would be: even if you're different, we'll find a way to include you. We've got your back.

That's what Jesus would do.
