Gubernatorial candidate Patricia Morgan announced that she will name John Robitaille as Secretary of Commerce if she is elected governor.

“I've agreed to strongly consider joining her administration as Commerce Secretary if she is elected governor. Patricia and I spoke about this position, the on-going challenges to attract and retain businesses, and what Rhode Island needs to do to become more business-friendly. I believe we could work together to create a more business-friendly environment where innovative new ventures are launched and supported, and where existing local companies thrive and expand. This is no easy task; Rhode Island has a long way to go, and it will take cooperation from many stakeholders,” said Robitaille.

Robitaille served as the Republican Party nominee in the 2010 election for governor, but lost to Lincoln Chafee.

Chafee won the election with 36% of the vote to Robitaille’s 34% and Frank Caprio’s 23%.

Robitaille first got involved in politics 2006 when he ran for State Representative, but lost by four votes to Amy Rice.

Prior to his political career, he served as an officer in the United States Army from 1970 to 1976.

Following his military career, Robitaille founded Perspective Communications Group in 1987, before leaving the company in 2008 to work for Governor Donald Carcieri.

Morgan Released the Following Statement:

“Rhode Island needs to refocus the Commerce Department on improving our overall business climate. When I speak with business owners, they talk, not just of a bad business environment, but of a hostile one. Clearly, the numerous national rankings attest to how difficult it is for companies, large and small, to succeed in Rhode Island.  We’ve been bouncing along the bottom for far too long.

The national economy is growing a 4%.  Sadly Rhode Island is growing at half that pace. While other states are building factories, corporate office buildings and thriving economies, the Governor brags about hotels and apartment buildings going up and Mayor Fung congratulates himself on hosting a shopping center in his city.  It is no wonder that Rhode Islanders say we are on the wrong path.  We are!

It will take reform of the foundations of our economy to make our jobs climate strong again. Over decades, state leaders have hampered our economy with bad policies, laws, practices, and regulations. Each has taken its toll, and today our state has the miserable distinction of being the ‘first in and the last out’ of any recession.  We must change before the next downturn comes.

I have spoken with John Robitaille, a former business executive, small business owner and Executive Director at the Johnson and Wales Center for Entrepreneurship about my Blueprint for a Stronger Rhode Island. He knows the struggles of both small and large businesses.  He understands what must change and the most important steps needed to reinvigorate our sluggish economy. He knows it will be a tough challenge. I have asked him to serve as the Secretary of Commerce in a Morgan Administration and he will strongly consider joining me once I become Governor.

Together we would focus the Commerce Department on its original goal.  In my administration, Commerce RI will work with the legislature and with all state agencies to reform and/or eliminate the bad policies and practices that are dragging down our economic vitality.  I will also propose the establishment of three new state business parks modeled on the very successful Quonset Business Corporation. Together these important initiatives will begin Rhode Island on the path to prosperity again.

Governor Raimondo took this important agency down a path of corporate welfare, tax subsidies, grants, and credits.  The $278 million spent has not provided the well-paying, permanent jobs that Rhode Islanders want.

As Secretary, John Robitaille would help me create a business environment in which all companies can thrive.  We want a Rhode Island where local companies can grow and out of state companies will want to move here without needing to be bribed.”
