NEW: 16,000 Mail Ballots in Play, Count Underway at RI Board of Elections

Lawyers from the campaigns descended on the Board of Elections at Branch Avenue on Tuesday afternoon, to certify mail ballots on hand at the facility.

Robert Kando, the Executive Director of the Board of Elections, spoke with GoLocal about where they were at in the process Tuesday afternoon.

"About 19,000 [mail ballots] have been requested," said Kando at 1:30 pm when the when the video was taken.  "Thirteen thousand have been received, and at this point the board has certified many of the thirteen thousand.  So the board will be looking at the remaining portion."

Kando said they were "looking at several hours" of review.  "The Board will be open until at least 8 tonight regardless."

Ballot Update

In an update at 4:15 PM, Kando had said that the number of ballots had gone up to 16,000. When pressed for a specific number, Kando indicated that he Board of Elections probably wouldn’t see many more. Kando also was not sure of the numbers in reference to rejections.

The Board of Elections is currently processing ballots through the counter and will not have a count until the last ballot is fed through, a process that might not be completed today.

Additionally, damaged ballots must be processed, a process which according to Kando involves numbering the ballots damaged and getting a new ballot out of the ballot stock. When there is a new ballot matched with the damaged ballot, Kando said that the next step is to number the ballots similarly so that they are considered “brother and sister” so that damaged ballots can accurately be matched and processed.
