A potential challenger to Representative Anastasia Williams is being courted to run against the long-time Providence politician in District 9.

Joann Ayuso, a personal trainer and Army Reservist, said she has "been in talks" with political advisors, but said she is unsure if she will choose to run this year yet. The final day for candidates to file for the 2016 election is June 29.

"I've talked with some folks, some advisors, and I would love to run," said Ayuso.  "I'm a personal trainer, I'm starting to get my work off the ground.  I'm involved with LGBQT and advocacy in the community.  I think at this point I'd like to get a little more involved in the community, but I do have a few more meetings set up with advisors to talk."

Incumbent Williams was first elected in 1992, and has come under scrutiny in recent years for her management of the John Hope Settlement House (which GoLocal was first to report lost federal funding last year) and recently was the subject of an ethics complaint for failing to disclose her employment with the city -- and work at John Hope -- on her annual ethics filings.

Ayuso on the Record

"I feel strongly about the community and the future," said Ayuso. "I've heard from folks about what's going on, there's a lot of disappointment and anger, and a desire for some new energy that needs to come in. I feel the community has been disappointed in the past with Anastasia Williams and some of the negative things she's been saying.  I would need to prepare myself. She's tough, and the position's tough."

"I'm a people person, I've got some clients who are involved in politics, and I've heard from some Brown professors about running," said Ayuso. "So yes, you could say I've been courted.  I'd have to prepare myself, and see when the best opportunity could be."
