Elon Musk has announced that after asking for input on social media, that he is indeed launching a new American political party.
Taking to his platform "X" (formerly Twitter), Musk shared the following on Saturday:
By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!
When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.
Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.
It marks the latest move in the contentious relationship between Musk and Republican President Donald Trump, where tempers flared most recently over Trump's signature spending legislation, the so-called "big beautiful bill."
"Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who bombarded President Donald Trump’s signature spending bill for weeks, on Friday made his first comments since the legislation passed," reported CNBC. "Musk backed a post on X by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who said the bill’s budget 'explodes the deficit' and continues a pattern of 'short-term politicking over long-term sustainability.'”
The announcement of the new political party makes good on a promise - or threat - that Musk has repeatedly made.
"Musk’s resolution to support candidates who plan to launch primary campaigns against members of Congress is one of Musk’s most concrete political threats since leaving his post as a White House adviser, " wrote CNN.
"Musk spent more than $275 million to support Trump and other Republican candidates in the 2024 election. In late May, he said in an interview he was planning to cut back on political spending, saying he has 'done enough.'
