RI Rep. Almeida Gets 1 Year Probation, $1000 Fine

Rhode Island State Representative Joseph Almeida, who was arrested in February for misappropriation of campaign funds for personal use, pled guilty on Tuesday to a misdemeanor for one year probation and a $1,000 fine.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin had originally charged Almeida with a felony for unlawful appropriation of $6,122.03, which if convicted could have been punished by imprisonment for not more than twenty (20) years or by a fine of not more than five thousand dollars ($50,000), or both.

"Representative Almeida is relived to put this unfortunate matter behind him for the sake of his constituents his family and himself," said Almeida's lawyer Artin Coloian. "He looks forward to continuing service to his district at the state house."

Almeida, who represents District 12 in Providence, served in the House from 1999 to 2010, and was elected again in 2012 to to represent the South Side and Washington Park.

Almeida had resigned his post as House Democratic Whip following his arrest in February, which was the result of an investigation by the State Police Financial Crimes Unit that originated from a complaint filed by the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General, who had received the results of a campaign finance audit of Mr. Almeida's campaign finances from the Rhode Island Board of Elections.
