The Economist Dubs Providence “NE Armpit” and Cianci “Gangster”

The Economist took a shot at Providence and former mayor Buddy Cianci, calling his announced candidacy in the upcoming mayoral election “Freshening New England’s Armpit.”

The Economist points out that Cianci’s life inspired a “gangster musical” off Broadway in 2003, and the musical included a number titled “The Armpit of New England,” referencing Providence.

The Economist profiled Cianci’s previous runs as mayor, his run-ins with the law, and his bounce back with his book, marinara sauce, and radio show.

“Even Mr Cianci’s critics concede that he loves Providence and wants it to do well,” the article states. “But his reputation could deter businesses from moving to the city, which was once known as the ‘beehive of industry.’ Not all comebacks are welcome.”
