Of the 13 members of the Gina Raimondo gubernatorial transition team, five members are investment bankers, bank board members or high-level banking executives.

The five bankers include: Stephanie Ogidan Preston, a VP at Citizens Bank; Merrill Sherman, former CEO of BankRI; investment banker Mark Pelson; Dennis Algiere of Washington Trust and a State Senator; and BankRI Board member Meredith Curren. One other member is a high-level insurance executive – Marianne Monte.  Monte is an Executive with Hanover Group in Worcester, MA.

No other sector has more than two representatives.   Organized labor can claim two representatives – Patrick Quinn of Local 1199 of SEIU and Michael Sabitoni of the RI Building and Construction Trades.

Other members of the transition team are Yvette Mendez of the RI Foundation, Tom Kane of AccessPointRI, former Lincoln Chafee and David Cicilline staffer Deborah Brayton, Dr. Alvaro Olivares at Butler Hospital and Brown University, and Linda D'Amario Rossi – the former head of DCYF.

In contrast, Lincoln Chafee had few business members on his transition team. As GoLocal reported in 2010:

Lincoln Chafee
Governor-elect Lincoln Chafee announced key members of his transition team today. The team will be chaired by Patrick A. Rogers, who is a partner at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, LLP.

“I am pleased that Patrick Rogers will spearhead the transition effort,” Chafee said. “Pat has a long record of public service and strong leadership and organizational skills. I am confident that he will do a fine job directing the transition effort.”

Chafee also appointed four people to his Transition Advisory Committee: CVS executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes; Pablo Rodriguez M.D., of Women and Infants Hospital; former U.S. Attorney Meg Curran; and Robert A. Walsh, Jr., executive director of the NEA-RI.

“One of my goals as governor is to attract outstanding talent to public service: smart, hard-working and energetic leaders to bring new ideas to state government,” Chafee said. “These initial members of my Transition Advisory Committee are proven leaders in their respective fields of expertise, and I thank them for their service and welcome their assistance to help Rhode Island realize its full potential.”

Members of his transition leadership team include: Stephen Hourahan, Transition Director; Michael Trainor, Deputy Transition Director; Jonathan Stevens, Director of Transition Policy; and Judge Stephen Erickson, Transition Legislative Liaison/Legal Adviser. Rogers will serve as chairman of the team.
