On Tuesday afternoon, the campaigns of both Democrat Gina Raimondo and Republican Allan Fung pointed to Johnston and North Providence as bellwethers in today’s election.

State Representative K. Joseph Shekarchi, perhaps Raimondo’s top strategist, said the turnout on the East Side of Providence looked relatively high—a good sign for Raimondo. But, he expects Cranston to favor Fung and Warwick to be close.

But Shekarchi said he’s hoping Raimondo will finish close enough in both Cranston and Warwick that the so-called “cannoli belt” (which refers to Johnston and North Providence due to their high number if Italian American descendents) will provide her with the margin of victory needed to win the election.

Fung’s campaign manager, Patrick Sweeney agreed with Shekarchi’s assessment of the East Side of Providence as well as Cranston and Warwick, but said the cannoli belt would provide the margin of victory.

Sweeney pointed to Joe Polisena’s endorsement—Johnston’s Democrat Mayor—of Fung as evidence that the Cranston Mayor will do well in Johnston and neighboring North Providence. Shekarchi argued that the endorsement shouldn’t matter much given that Polisena previously endorsed Clay Pell, who then lost to Raimondo in the Democratic Primary.

Johnston and North Providence have served as bellwethers in recent elections. In 2006, Carcieri lost both North Providence and Johnston, but it didn’t matter given his healthy margins in Warwick and Cranston. With the race expected to be closer in Warwick, North Providence and Johnston would matter more this year. In 2002, Carcieri won both Johnston and North Providence by 55 to 43 and 53 to 46 respectively. In 1998, Lincoln Almond won Johnston, but lost North Providence by a small margin.
