Raimondo 1000+ Jobs Claim - Narragansett Beer Has 13

A new ad by Gina Raimondo says the Democratic candidate for Governor created over a thousand jobs in Rhode Island, from "high-tech to beer" -- of which Narragansett Brewery employs 13.

The ad focuses on the reestablishment of Narragansett Beer in Rhode Island, where a half dozen corporate employees work in Providence along with a sales staff which doubles the number.

"On any given day, we'll have five full time people here, plus interns, and seven to eight sales folks who call this office their headquarters," said Jim Crooks, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Narragansett.  "We also have about 40 part-time promotional staff, half of those are in Rhode Island."

The Narragansett brand, which was established originally in Rhode Island in 1890, has been brewed in upstate New York since being bought by a team of Rhode Island investors in 2005.

"We have a contract with the brewery in New York, who added some jobs there to take us on," said Crooks.

In her ad, Raimondo said she "has a plan to bring manufacturing jobs back to Rhode Island."

Crooks said the company was actively pursuing bringing brewing operations in-state.  "We hope to have an announcement by the end of the year," said Crooks.

Stu Mundy, a retired Teamster, said he was surprised to see the ad.

"I used to work back in the 70s with companies that picked up at the Narragansett Brewery in Cranston," said retired Teamster Stu Mundy.  "When I heard the jingle on the ad, I was surprised.  The commercials always said the "best beer brewed with Scituate water"...it's not even the same beer."
