Allan Fung

Rumors swirled that Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian has met with some GOP operatives about jumping into the Governor’s race. This would have an adverse impact on the Cranston Mayor’s chances as the pull from the same moderate base. Avedisian would have a tough time with more traditional Republicans, needing to explain his Chafee support over the past few years. Fung did celebrate a birthday this week with a bash at Cranston Country Club with a full house.

GRADE: B-

Gina Raimondo

Raimondo’s financial literacy programs took another hit this week as GoLocal’s Stephen Beale explored the fundraising and business ties between Raimondo, the programs, her former partners in her venture capital group, and tens of thousands of dollars in funding to the groups and campaign donations.

Another disclosure that raises questions about Raimondo and her ties to Wall Street investment. On the flip side - those investment bankers, hedge fund guys, and venture capitalists keep writing checks.

GRADE: C+

Ken Block

The GOP candidate hit a couple of solid wins. First, he announced that John Hazen White would headline his big fundraising event in March – Hazen White previously was a Fung campaign committee member. More substantively, Block put forth an economic development plan that stood up well to media and political review. While an Avedisian leap into the GOP Governor’s race would be devastating for Fung, it would not be helpful to Block either.

The downside, Block’s voting record as an adult is inconsistent at best.

GRADE: B+

Angel Taveras

Remember the old Benny’s commercial where the shopper is walking in a big box store searching for staff help? The exodus of staff from Taveras is unmatched. It looks a lot like rats jumping of the sinking ship. Every key player has quit the team in the past year.

The pothole factor is beginning to be another example of not being able to do the little things. It raises the questions, if you can’t fix a pothole as Mayor, then how are you going to fix the state’s economy?

GRADE: C-

Clay Pell

The 32-year-old millionaire had a tough week. A GoLocal investigation found that he has voted less than 50% of the time and his wife has only voted once as an adult. Then, his communication director, Bill Fisher quit the campaign, and then his car was stolen. Pell needs to look like more than a rich kid soon – he may have great ideas about the future of Rhode Island and he should share them. On the one positive side, it is clear that he is the candidate of the NEA, but if he is not competitive they will need to jump ship to ensure that they are a player in the Democratic primary.
