The Money Race – Caprio Raises More

They may be close in the polls, but Democrat Frank Caprio is ahead of independent Lincoln Chafee in fundraising, according to campaign finance reports filed yesterday, 28 days in advance of the general election.

Caprio, the Democratic candidate for governor, raised $422,077.48 between July 1 and October 4, compared to just $206,237 for independent Chafee. However, the latter more than made up for it by loaning his campaign $500,000 from a joint account he holds with his wife, Stephanie Chafee, according to Campaign Manager J.R. Pagliarini. Caprio also ended the period with a bigger war chest than Chafee—$1,014,621.34 compared to $172,368.73.

Republican John Robitaille raised $70,338.00 in individual contributions and ended with a cash balance of $266,526.03. He also is the only candidate who took public matching funds, in the amount of $282,351.00. Of the four candidates, his reporting period - September 7 to October 4 - was considerably shorter, because he filed an additional report before the September 14 primary. The other three candidates did not face a primary.
