Where is Raimondo? Few Public Events on Governor’s Schedule

No kickoff event for Raimondo in 2018
The week after her announcement for re-election for Governor, Gina Raimondo’s public schedule has only one event listed.

In the upcoming week of June 4 thru June 8, the only event on Raimondo's public schedule is “Governor and First Gentlemen to host Relish Rhody Contest celebratory banquet." That event will be held at the DelSesto Middle School in Providence, RI.

The Relish Rhody contest is the brainchild of the RI Director of Food Strategy Sue AnderBois. The application for this contest was extended multiple times.

The number of events on her public schedule has plummeted.

Each week her schedule of “public events”  is distributed to the media and available to the public.

In the fall of 2017, Governor Gina Raimondo launched a celebration of her first 1,000 days — the weeklong event was carefully choreographed with multiple events around the state and most days were themed - the economy or the environment.

This past week, Raimondo kicked off her official re-election campaign with an online video. No formal traditional campaign event at a venue like Rhodes on the Pawtuxet or Hope Artiste Mill where she kicked off her 2014 run.

This upcoming week -- only one event on the pubic schedule

Instead of barnstorming the state and visiting each of Rhode Island cities and towns — Raimondo’s public schedule only showed a handful of events. The events were highly choreographed with little interaction with the public. The biggest of the events was the Deepwater announcement. It was held at Port of Providence a secure TSA area.

When asked why her campaign rollout week was so limited, her office claimed the this past week’s schedule was robust, despite the lack of events disclosed to the public or the media.

But, even the expanded list of events provided by Raimondo’s office via email to GoLocal for this story only included an average of two events per day — a remarkably low number for a candidate announcing for re-election.

“She had multiple events on Monday for Memorial Day, kept an office schedule on Tuesday, announced 800+ jobs with Deepwater at ProvPort on Wednesday, held a press conference with small business owners yesterday then stopped in to visit with community leaders and shop owners in Olneyville, she was on Gene Valicenti’s show this morning and just finished a gun safety bill signing event with 100+ gun safety advocates and law enforcement leaders. She’s gotten right back to the business of governing,” said Raia in an email to GoLocal.

Questions persist — is Raimondo failing to disclose her schedule or has dialed she back her schedule? Is she using each day to work on campaign strategy and fundraising calls or has her schedule been paired back?

In the first quarter of 2018, Raimondo raised a record $1.3 million towards her re-election efforts. Her fundraising took in more monies than all other state and local candidates running for state or local office combined. Raimondo made thousands of phone calls to secure more than 2,000 individual donations.

Raimondo's fundraising took her to California, Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts to name a few of the fundraising locations.
