McCourty Re-Signs With The Patriots Before Free Agency Hits

Just hours before free agency started in the NFL, the New England Patriots locked-up a major free agent piece when they re-signed safety Devin McCourty late on Sunday night according to multiple reports and later confirmed by McCourty.

McCourty was set to hit the free agent market after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Patriots. He was expected to be the top safety on the market with teams such as Philadelphia and the New York Giants expected to be major players for his services.

None of that happened, however as the Patriots have signed McCourty to a reported 5-year, $47.5-million deal according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. The deal also includes $28.5-million per reports form Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston. The first reports of the deal came from Mike Garafolo from Fox Sports 1 and was confirmed by Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.

McCourty played in all of the Patriots games in 2014-15, registering 68 regular season tackles and adding 10 postseason tackles. McCourty had two regular season interceptions and six pass defensed while adding one more interception and three passes defensed in the postseason.

McCourty and the people closest to him then took to social media and television to spread the news. McCourty spent time on Comcast SportsNet New England and said, "I knew it in my heart I wanted to be back in New England," but mentioned that he understood the business side. McCourty also mentioned that the Patriots met all the numbers he was looking for in a major contract. Reports from Rapoport said that McCourty turned down more money from other teams to return to New England.

McCourty’s agent, mother and twin brother, Jason, all took to twitter to share in the news.

After returning to New England as a player, McCourty reportedly went on a recruiting mission. McCourty told Manza Young that he has reached out to Darrelle Revis to tell him he hopes they are teammates next season.
