NEW: Kevin Silva Wins 110th RI Amateur at Metacomet

Kevin Silva, of Montaup Country Club, has won the 110th Rhode Island Amateur Championship, defeating John Jackopsic of Meadow Brook 6 & 5 in the 36 hole final match on Friday afternoon at Metacomet Country Club.

Silva birdied five of the first ten holes to go three up thru 13. Silva would remain three up after the first 18 holes.

Silva extended his match lead to four up through 23 holes and five up through 27 holes to win the match 6 & 5.

Silva entered the match play portion of the tournament as a 16 seed after shooting a 36 hole score of 143 in the qualifying round.

Silva dispatched Jim Mahoney in the first round and top seeded Patrick Welch in the second round before grinding out wins against Seamus Fennelly and Rob Grossguth to get to the final.

Kevin Silva spent seven years as a pro, playing in two U.S. Opens, before returning to Amateur status. That followed a successful college career at the University of North Carolina.

This was the first appearance in the Amateur for both John Jackopsic and Kevin Silva.

Past Champions

Defending champion Bobby Leopold lost in the first round to 2005 Champion Tom McCormick in 19 holes, while 2012 champion Charlie Blanchard lost in the quarterfinals to Rob Grossguth in 20 holes.

Brad Valois, 2013 Amateur Champion, fell in the first round to Jeff Giguere.
