Former Providence College men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino has been fired by Louisville, according to multiple reports.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich has also been fired.

The firings come after the Louisville basketball program was linked to a federal investigation for fraud and corruption in recruiting conducted by the FBI over a period of three years.

In a statement after the charges were announced, Pitino said, "These allegations come as a complete shock to me.

If true, I agree with the U.S. Attorneys Office that these third-party schemes, initiated by a few bad actors, operated to commit a fraud on the impacted universities and their basketball programs, including the University of Louisville. Our fans and supporters deserve better and I am committed to taking whatever steps are needed to ensure those responsible are held accountable."

Fraud and Corruption Investigation

On Tuesday, September 26, 10 men, including a top Adidas executive and four assistant basketball coaches, were charged with using hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to influence athletes' choice of schools, shoe sponsors, agents, and tailors.

According to the FBI, at least three top high school recruits were promised payments of up to $150,000, using money supplied by Adidas, to attend schools sponsored by the company.

The allegations against Louisville include payments of $100,000 from Adidas to the family of an unnamed player, identified as "Player-10," to make sure he signs with the school.

FBI telephone records show that Adidas executive James Gatto spoke with an unnamed Louisville coach multiple times in the days leading up to the player signing with the program.

Pitino Scandals

While at Louisville, Pitino has been involved in a number of scandals.

In 2010, he testified in a federal extortion trial involving Karen Sypher. Pitino admitted to having sex with the woman in a closed Louisville restaurant in 2003.

Sypher went to prison after trying to get money and gifts from him in exchange for silence.

In 2015, the NCAA launched an investigation into a sex-for-pay scandal put together by former Louisville assistant coach Andre McGee. That scandal could force Louisville to vacate their 2013 national championship as well as dozens of other wins.

For that, Pitino was to be suspended for Louisville’s first five ACC games during the 2017-18 season.

Pitino was one of Providence College's greatest coaches and he led the Friars to the 1987 Final Four.

Season Approaching
