NEW: URI Basketball Picked to Finish 2nd in A-10

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team was picked to finish second in the A-10 by the conferences' head coaches and select media.

This is the highest that URI has been picked since the 2007-08 season when the Rams were also picked to finish second. URI got a eight out of a possible 27 first place votes for a total of 347 points.

Dayton was picked to finish first with 12 first place votes while Davidson was picked to finish third. George Washington and VCU round out the top five. See the full rankings below.

Individual Honors

URI guard E.C. Matthews and forward Hassan Martin were selected to the preseason all-conference first team.

Matthews was selected to the A-10 second team last season and is the league's third leading returning scorer,  averaging 16.9 points per game. Matthews enters the season just one point away from the 1,000 point club and is one of 20 players selected to the Jerry West Award watch list, which honors the top shooting guard in the country.

Hassan Martin was also a second team pick in 2014-15 and this season has been named to the preseason all defensive team. Martin averaged three blocked shots and 7.7 rebounds per game last season.

Along with all of that, Martin also averaged 11.4 points per game and had a field goal percentage of 59.8.

Season Begins

The URI Rams kick off their schedule on Friday, November 13 when they host American at the Ryan Center. Tip off is set or 8 p.m.
