PC Hockey's National Title Defense Begins Tonight

The Providence College Friars men's hockey team begins their National Championship title defense tonight when they open the regular season against Miami of Ohio. The two game series will serve as a rematch of last seasons NCAA East Semifinal that saw Providence beat Miami 7-5 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and advance to the Frozen Four.

Providence is 39-24-1 all-time in season openers and 3-1 under head coach Nate Leaman. 

The 2015-16 Friars

Leading Providence will be seniors Tom Parisi and Kevin Rooney, who were named captains, while Mark Jankowski and Nick Saracino were named alternates.

For his career, Nick Saracino has a total of 35 goals and 49 assists while Jankowski has tallied 28 goals and 42 assists.

The Friars return nine seniors, who have played a total of 843 games combined, and welcome seven freshman, including Hayden Hawkey, Erik Foley and Steven Ruggiero, all three of whom are NHL draft picks.

Hawkey was a sixth round pick of Montreal in 2014 while Foley was a third round pick of Winnipeg in 2015. Ruggiero was selected in the sixth round by the Anaheim Ducks in 2015. Overall, Providence has eight NHL draft picks on their roster.

Between the pipes, the Friars will have to replace Jon Gillies who has moved on to the NHL. Providence looks like they will give junior Nick Ellis the start but Hawkey is likely to see time throughout the season.

Preseason Rankings

The Friars were picked to finish third overall in the 2015-16 Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll released on Monday. Providence received two first place votes. Boston College  was picked to finish first and national runner up Boston University was picked to finish second. 

PC was also picked seventh in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll and received six first place votes in the USCHO.com poll.

Countdown to The Banner Ceremony

After this weekend's games in Ohio, the Friars will return home and get ready for Friday, October 16th's home opener against Holy Cross. Prior to the game, PC will raise thier national championship banner to the rafters. 

The doors open at 6:15 with pregame festivities and puck drop starting at 7 p.m.
