Pitino Calls '87 PC Friars “Best” of All His Final Four Teams

Former Providence College Men’s Basketball Coach Rick Pitino officially has a favorite Final Four team.

And it’s his 1986-1987 Friars.

It probably should come as no surprise as he made the pronouncement as part of PC’s “Legacy” roundtable discussion. Ed Cooley, the Friars’ current head coach who counts six NCAA Tournament appearances over his 11 seasons, served as the master of ceremonies

“I always get misty-eyed thinking about 1987. It just didn’t make any sense. It was magical. I’ve been to seven final fours — and Providence was always the best,” said Pitino. 

Pitino is the only coach in American collegiate basketball history to guide three different schools (PC, Kentucky and Louisville) to a Final Four round of the NCAA Tournament.
